PORTAGE -- Ongoing talks between the Portage Teachers Union, and other organized labor groups in the district, have prompted the Board of Education to cancel plans for a special meeting to talk about layoffs tonight.

School officials said they may have to lay off as many as 53 teachers and support staff to erase a 2.5-million dollar deficit, in this year’s budget, caused by mid year cuts in state funding.

Any cuts in pay or benefits would require approval by union members.
