The new semester at WMU is getting off on a sour note after a young girl fell through the balusters of a second story balcony during a party at a Frat House and was seriously injured, when she landed head first on the pavement below. It’s resulted in the closure of the Sigma Pi house on Fraternity Drive.
18-year-old Jordyn Sanderson of Portland, Michigan suffered a fractured skull and neck injuries and is listed in critical condition. She is not a WMU student. 200 were at the party, many of them drunk and some underaged. It’s not known if the girl had been drinking.
She was actually discovered lying on the ground by Public Safety Officers on their way to deal with excessive noise.
Asst. Chief Brian Uridge says some of the balusters may have been removed and used as firewood.
The frat has already been told to remove its Greek letters from the house, and has been shut down pending a university investigation. The Building has been condemned by the city,
It may result in serious university sanctions against the frat and its leaders, and possible criminal charges if the victim had been drinking.
