STEVENS POINT ,Wis. (WSAU) – Portage County authorities are putting out a warning about a scam letter about your deed that is making the rounds.
The company in the letter claims they can get you a certified copy of your deed set to you for just 87 dollars. But Portage County register of deeds Cindy Wisinski says state statutes put the cost of one of those copies to just two or three dollars. “People have been sending this exorbitant fee to these people when all they need to do is come to the courthouse and get a copy.”
Wisinski says you should be wary of any sort of official document asking for money for something you could get yourself. “If you'd come into our office, that certified copy which is just as good as the original is just 3 dollars.”
The company in question is the State Record Retrieval Board from Milwaukee. Wisinski says if you do get that letter you should either destroy it or report it to the authorities.
