MONTGOMERY, Al. (WSAU) - Thousands of Packer fans are heading to Green Bay for the N-F-L season opener against the New Orleans Saints tonight. But even if the Packers lose, they’ll still be huge winners in the eyes of a high school football team in Montgomery Alabama.
The new coach at Jefferson Davis High, Vincent Wiggins, wanted to go back to a time when his school’s uniforms looked like the Packers’ green-and-gold. As it turned out, the previous coach changed the uniforms so they looked like the University of Oregon’s colors – and many alumni were none-too-pleased.
Wiggins didn’t have the budget to change the colors back. So he asked one of his assistants, former N-F-L assistant Billy Long, to see if he could pull some strings with the Packers to get some used items with Green Bay’s colors. And just days later, two large boxes arrived with pants, gloves, and cleats – all free with no questions asked.
Tim Schroeder of the Packers’ community outreach division provided the help – and Long said the team could not have been nicer about it.
