KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Some members of the Kalamazoo clergy would like the city of Kalamazoo defy the state ban on domestic partner benefits.
A prayer breakfast was held Thursday, organized by the Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center. A few members of the clergy urged city officials to continue to offer the benefits, despite the state law that bans them.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell said they can’t break the law, but he certainly pledged to continue to press the case with the Snyder Administration that denying the benefits would seem to fly in the face of their desire to “reinvent” Michigan, and make it a friendlier place to live and work.
Eigh city employees have lost their partner benefits because of the law.
