KALAMAZOO (WKZO)-- For the past two Saturdays, Western Michigan has been in position to sweep their opponents in the weekend series, but they were tripped up in the second game. That trend continued tonight, falling to Ohio State 4-3 in a wild game at Lawson Ice Arena. Ohio State won their first win of the second half after leading the CCHA for much of the first half of the season.

Ohio State built an early lead on two power play goals coming just over a minute apart in the first period. They finished the game making good on 3 of 5 power plays.

Western Michigan cut into the lead late in the period on Chase Balisy’s 10th of the year. The first period ended with the Broncos trailing 2-1.

A scoreless second period was full of penalties. A combined seven penalties were called for 14 minutes were whistled. Chippy play spilled into the third period when Chase Balisy was whistled for checking from behind. He was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct, ending his night.

The Broncos opened the scoring in the final frame on a Will Kessel slap shot, his 3rd goal of the year, tying the score at 2. Matt Tennyson gave the Broncos the lead under a minute later with his 9th of the season. The Buckeyes clawed back late in the game with a pair of Alex Carlson goals, putting Ohio State up for good. Ohio State outshot Western Michigan 30-24 on their way to their first win in the second half. Western Michigan falls 5 points back of Ferris State, who completed the weekend sweep of Notre Dame.
