(Reuters) - Tiffany & Co
A rebound in the U.S. stock market and easing in the debt crisis in Europe have helped business after the New York-based chain said in January that many customers had been "restrained" in their spending during the holiday season.
"That was the first warning that the luxury party was coming to an end, but now it seems it was just a speed bump," said Morningstar analyst Paul Swinand.
So far this quarter, which includes the Valentine's Day holiday, sales are "tracking in line" with the company's expectations, Chief Executive Michael Kowalski said in a statement. Valentine's Day is typically the third-biggest selling event for the jewelry industry.
For the fiscal year that ends next January, Tiffany expects global net sales to be up 10 percent, led by gains in Asia and the Americas. That would be an improvement over the soft holiday sales, but still below last year's 18 percent clip.
The company forecast a full-year profit of between $3.95 and $4.05 per share, above Wall Street estimates of $3.93, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Tiffany, which operates 247 stores worldwide, plans to add 24 stores this year - including new stores in Montreal, Salt Lake City and the SoHo district of Manhattan, and seven more in Asia.
The company said that much of its profit growth for the year will occur later in 2012, thanks partly to a jewelry tie-in with the upcoming "Great Gatsby" motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Tiffany is also planning to carry 15 percent more inventory this year to support the chain's 175th anniversary.
Kowalski told analysts on a conference call that Tiffany was still gunning for long-term sales gains of 10 to 12 percent per year, and a 15 percent increase in annual earnings.
HELP FROM TOURISTS
Tiffany reported net income of $178.4 million, or $1.39 per share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended January 31, down from $181.2 million, or $1.41 per share, a year earlier. That was below the $1.42 per share that Wall Street analysts were expecting.
<^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Graphic on Tiffany http://link.reuters.com/rev27s
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>
Sales increased 8 percent to $1.19 billion in the fourth quarter, in a marked slowdown from the pace of the first nine months of the fiscal year. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 5 percent.
European customers' anxiety about the debt crisis hurt business, with same-store sales falling 2 percent in that region, the only market to see a decline.
There was also some caution by shoppers in New York, where a drop in annual bonuses paid to Wall Street employees put a dent in high-end jewelry sales. Sales at Tiffany's iconic Fifth Avenue flagship rose by only 2 percent in the fourth quarter.
Things would have been worse without an influx of tourists to New York during the holiday season. Spending by foreign tourists accounted for some 40 percent of sales at Tiffany's Fifth Avenue store, which generated almost one-tenth of the company's total sales.
Other luxury retailers such as Saks Inc
Some 25 percent of Tiffany's sales in Europe came from non-European customers, mitigating some of the 2 percent decline in the region's same-store sales.
Asia excluding Japan remained a major source of growth for Tiffany, with same-store sales up 13 percent. That market now accounts for almost one-fifth of overall sales.
In Japan, Tiffany's second-largest market after the United States, business continued to recover from the tsunami and nuclear disaster of a year ago, with same-store sales up 4 percent.
Tiffany shares were up 6.9 percent at $73.44 at midday on the New York Stock Exchange.

(Reuters) - Merck & Co
Merck posted a fourth-quarter net profit of $1.51 billion, or 49 cents per share, compared with a loss of $531 million, or 17 cents a share, a year ago, when the company took a $1.7 billion charge related to a major clinical setback.
Excluding items, including acquisition and restructuring expenses, Merck earned 97 cents per share. Analysts, on average, expected 95 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Global revenue rose 2 percent to $12.29 billion, just shy of Wall Street expectations of $12.53 billion.
Sales of Singulair, whose U.S. patent lapses in August, jumped 8 percent to almost $1.5 billion, well above any other Merck product. Sales of its Januvia diabetes drug soared 42 percent to $960 million, while a related combination product called Janumet jumped 34 percent to $386 million -- suggesting the fast-growing diabetes franchise will be able to help offset Singulair's approaching decline.
But sales of arthritis treatment Remicade fell 28 percent to $511 million following arbitration that assigns rival drugmaker Johnson & Johnson
Schering Plough and J&J had a longstanding agreement that divided up sales territories, but J&J demanded and won a more favorable arrangement after Merck bought Schering Plough.
Mark Schoenebaum, an analyst with ISI Group, said results were dampened by weak Remicade revenue and sales and administrative expenses that came in $141 million above expectations. He said earnings were bolstered, however, by research spending that was $145 million lower than Wall Street forecasts.
The company said it expects to seek approvals of five new medicines between 2012 and 2013. They include two products that have been delayed for years by regulators: Bridion, to reverse the effects of anesthesia, and Tredaptive, a form of niacin meant to raise "good" HDL cholesterol without causing facial flushing.
Merck said it expects full-year 2012 earnings of $3.75 to $3.85 per share, excluding special items. Analysts, on average, expect $3.83 per share. The forecast reflects earnings 0.5 percent lower to 2.1 percent higher than those seen in 2011.

MILAN (Reuters) - Plans to launch a European ratings agency to compete with S&P, Moody's and Fitch are at an advanced stage and a new private institution could start business as soon as the first half of this year, German businessman Roland Berger told an Italian newspaper.
The founder of consultancy Roland Berger said he hoped a new private, non-profit organization, in the form of a foundation, could be ready in "the first half or the first nine months of the year," according to Saturday's Corriere della Sera.
Berger, who has been lobbying European governments and companies to gather support and financing for a new agency, hopes to have raised the 300 million euros of capital needed from European investors by that time, the paper said.
"The proposed model is of an agency where the service is paid by the clients, who have an interest in having reliable and objective results," Berger said.
Roland Berger partner Markus Krall, who is largely tasked with setting up the agency, told Germany's Euro am Sonntag weekly that it would differentiate itself from competitors by accepting liability for its analysis.
This would mean customers could potentially claim damages from the agency, which Krall said provides a "strong incentive" to provide accurate analysis.
"Currently ratings are legally speaking purely opinion and are not subject to any product liability (laws)," Krall told the paper in comments published on Saturday.
European policymakers have criticised agencies Standard & Poor's
Earlier this month, S&P downgraded the credit ratings of nine euro-zone countries, stripping France and Austria of their coveted triple-A status but not EU paymaster Germany.
Berger's plan for the new agency, which would be incorporated in the Netherlands, has received signals of support from the European Commission and governments in Europe but also in China and among some Arab states, the paper said.

(Reuters) - Eli Lilly & Co forecast a sharp plunge in profits for 2012, the first full year its top-selling Zyprexa schizophrenia treatment faces generic competition, and its shares fell as much as 3.6 percent.
Like other drugmakers, Lilly is facing patent expirations on its most important medicines, leading generic competitors to erode billions of dollars in revenue. But unlike rivals such as Pfizer Inc, Lilly is not significantly cutting spending, including on research, in order to shore up profits.
The Indianapolis-based company said it will maintain or even slightly increase its investment in research and development this year compared with 2011, while spending on sales and administration in 2012 would be higher than what analysts generally expected.
Chief Financial Officer Derica Rice told analysts on a conference call that Lilly had pared down costs for several years to prepare for the Zyprexa patent expiration, including cutting more than 7,000 jobs since 2004. The company does not plan any additional major restructuring, he said.
"Having substantially reduced our infrastructure, we are positioned to fund the R&D that will drive our future growth" Rice said.
The company projected earnings of $3.10 to $3.20 per share for 2012. Analysts' average forecast is $3.61, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For 2011, Lilly said it expects to meet or exceed its previous profit forecast of $4.30 to $4.35 per share excluding one-time items. Including items, it expects $3.84 to $3.89 per share.
Zyprexa, a $4.5 billion-a-year product, began facing U.S. competition in October from low-cost generic versions. Lilly's Cymbalta antidepressant, with $4 billion in annual sales, goes generic in mid-2013, and generic forms of its Evista osteoporosis drug arrive in 2014.
DIFFERENT THAN RIVALS
Chief Executive John Lechleiter has vowed to remain independent through the three-year patent cliff, rather than merging with another big drugmaker to cushion the generic blows. He has defended his stance on R&D spending as necessary to usher in a new era of innovative medicines.
Deutsche Bank analyst Barbara Ryan said Lilly's spending levels were "inconsistent" with rivals, so investors should not expect other drugmakers to issue similarly disappointing forecasts.
Lilly said it had 12 drugs in late-stage, Phase III clinical studies, exceeding its goal of having 10 at that stage by the end of 2011.
"Today's guidance reaffirms the ongoing earnings pressure to Lilly's results over next few years ... at a time when the company simultaneously needs to invest heavily in its pipeline," JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott said in a research note.
Lilly stood by its previous forecast for net income of at least $3 billion on revenue of at least $20 billion each year through 2014.
For 2012, Lilly said it expects revenue of $21.8 billion to $22.8 billion. That would be a significant drop from the $24.2 billion analysts are looking for in 2011.
Lilly expects Zyprexa sales to decline by more than $3 billion, which will be somewhat offset by growth in products such as Cymbalta, erectile dysfunction drug Cialis and its Humalog and Humulin insulins.
Overall operating expenses will stay "essentially flat" in 2012, Lilly said. R&D spending will stand at $5 billion to $5.3 billion in 2012, the company said, which will be flat or slightly higher than in 2011.
Wall Street is eagerly awaiting late-stage results for Lilly's experimental Alzheimer's disease drug, solanezumab, which could be a huge seller. But many analysts doubt the product will prove effective.
A panel of outside safety experts overseeing the Phase III trial for solanezumab will meet later this month and the company said it plans to provide an update at the end of January.
JPMorgan's Schott earlier this week projected that Lilly's earnings per share would decline 5 percent a year on average through 2017.
Lilly shares were down 1.9 percent at $39.93 at midday on the New York Stock Exchange, off an earlier low at $39.25.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc
Stephenson told a Goldman Sachs investor conference that that he sees AT&T's business services division returning to growth in the fourth quarter of this year, but he noted that the company is dependent on employment levels and the U.S. economy.
"We're not seeing the signs that's about to take off," Stephenson said, adding that if he had to make a prediction right now, "2012 wouldn't look a lot different to what we've seen for 2011."
Stephenson said the consumer market was largely unchanged from December 2010, with "little activity" in the low end and trends unchanged at the high-end of the market.
The executive said the company still hoped it can address the U.S. government's concerns about its proposed $39 billion purchase of Deutsche Telekom AG
While it is preparing for a trial starting February 13 to defend the deal, AT&T is also looking to talk to the U.S. Department of Justice about a possible settlement ahead of the court date. The DoJ sued to block the deal in August.
"We do remain hopeful there may be some kind of solution that could address the DoJ concerns," Stephenson told the conference. "The benefits of the deal are unchanged."
AT&T has promised T-Mobile USA a package of benefits as a consolation if regulators do not approve the deal. The package includes a $3 billion cash breakup fee, some wireless spectrum and a roaming agreement.
Stephenson said he could not put a value on the roaming segment of the breakup package but described it as a multiyear roaming agreement for its slower second- and third-generation mobile network in response to a question.
Some sources have estimated that the entire package could be worth as much as $6 billion.
Shares of AT&T were down 1.6 percent at $27.86 in early trading.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - AT&T Inc
AT&T General Counsel Wayne Watts told reporters on Tuesday that the regulators' review of the deal thus far had been thorough, fact-based and "exactly as we expected."
The company has supplied the Justice Department with a requested second round of data, and has reviewed the comments of those who oppose the deal. The comment period closed Monday at the Federal Communications Commission.
"Here we are the day after those comments are in, and I can tell you I have not been surprised by anything that has happened in that process," Watts said.
The deal, which requires FCC and Justice Department approval, would concentrate 80 percent of U.S. wireless contract customers in just two companies -- AT&T/T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless
AT&T contends that the merger is necessary to improve service to its customers in the near-term by upgrading a network criticized by consumers for dropped calls and slow data speeds.
The company has committed to expanding next generation 4G wireless service to 97 percent of the U.S. population.
Further, T-Mobile USA has said it will not be able to remain competitive in the U.S. wireless market as its parent company, Deutsche Telekom AG
Watts rejected criticisms of the merger, including accusations that AT&T is warehousing spectrum and creating a duopoly with Verizon.
He said that while wireless carriers provide a national service, service plans and contracts are bought at the local level. He was confident regulators would review the deal on a market-by-market basis.
"There are so many competitors in the various markets that there are a wide range of markets where there's going to be four or more competitors left after this transaction," Watts said.
Watts declined to speculate about any conditions regulators might want to place on the deal or what kind of conditions the company might be willing to accept in exchange for approval.
"Having too many conditions doesn't look like what we should be thinking about right now. We're focusing on getting it done," he said.
