KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools had hoped to return to normal education practices in a month, but that won’t be happening. It may not be popular with parents either.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri says their only options are to introduce hybrid learning or remain virtual. She says their agreement with the Teachers Union prevents them from returning to a 5-day schedule as long as social distancing is required.
“It won’t happen until our region has reached post-pandemic status, which is not the case based on calculations from MDHHS”
A Hybrid plan would allow half the students to attend classes on Monday and Tuesday, and the other half on Thursday and Friday. Dr. Rita says it would include rigorous sanitation and other safety measures. Students who chose to learn remotely all year, will remain virtual.
“Staff must wear PPE at all times except meals and students must wear masks at all times on the buses and in the common areas”
They will hold three virtual public forums and conduct a survey next week on the two options.
- Monday, Feb. 2, 6-7:30 p.m.
- Tuesday Feb. 3, 4-5:30 p.m.
- Wednesday Feb. 4, 9-10:30 a.m.
The sessions will be available live on cable access. Links to the Zoom meetings also can be found on the KPS website by CLICKING HERE.
Dr. Rita says they want to hear from parents. She will announce her decision at the School Board’s next meeting.
