CASS COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Cass County authorities responded to two separate fatal car accidents over the weekend that involved drivers who were not wearing their seatbelts.
Sheriff Richard Behnke says the first one happened Friday evening in Silver Creek Township. 39-year-old Derrick Hydron of Niles was killed after he lost control of his vehicle on a curve and went off the roadway, causing his vehicle to roll. Speed and alcohol are believed to be a factor and Hydron was not wearing a seatbelt.
The second fatal crash happened early Sunday morning at around 2:00. Deputies responded to an area of U.S.-12 in Milton Township. 34-year-old Casey Butler of Elkhart, Indiana had died from injuries after losing control of her vehicle, going off the road, and overturning. It is unknown what may have contributed to the crash, but Butler was also not wearing a seat belt.
Investigations into both crashes are ongoing.
