KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Commissioners are expected to approve a resolution tonight opposing state legislation that would turn the state’s Mental Health System over to private insurance companies.
The bill, proposed by Republican Senate Leader Mike Shirkey, would impact about 300,000 patients with severe mental health issues, substance abuse problems, and the developmentally disabled in Michigan. Critics say it puts profits over patient care.
Board Members say it would also eliminate all the additional support services provided to patients by County Mental Health. Commissioner Jen Strebs, who works in the field, says it would increase administrative costs, cut services, and reduce public oversight.
