KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County’s new courthouse may just be a steel frame on Kalamazoo Avenue, but it now officially has a name.
Building Supervisor Jerry Vanderveen told the County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night they need to know what to put on the courthouse signs before they order them. He recommended they call it the Eleanor Street Justice Complex, and even presented a rendering of the imposing stone sign.
That won over the Republicans on the commission, but Democrats Jen Strebs and Tracy Hall had other ideas.
After some wordsmithing, commissioners decided to call it the Downtown Justice Center.
The county plans to open the $100-million dollar building in the spring or summer of 2023. It will replace their 83-year-old courthouse on Michigan Avenue.
The final vote on the new name split down party lines.
