KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — As this year’s construction season begins, the City of Kalamazoo has contracted to fix more sidewalks this year than it has in the past. City Utilities Director Jim Baker says in some cases, it will mean new sidewalks where none exist, while in others it will mean fixing sidewalks that are broken or lifted by tree roots.
The plan is to prioritize streets near schools and local shopping districts that don’t have sidewalks now. Mayor Dave Anderson says they can afford to do it because of the Foundation for Excellence. He remembers years when the city didn’t have the money.
They plan to upgrade about 4-miles of sidewalks this construction season.
