PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A $175 million dollar bond approved by voters back in August of 2021 will soon bear fruit in the form of new elementary schools for the City of Portage.
According to a May 10 article published by MLive, designs and plans of the new Haverhill and Central elementary schools were presented to the Board of Education on Monday, May 9.
District officials say the new schools will be built with the funding of the voter approved bond with Haverhill and Central being the first buildings to be replaced.
The bond is also set to replace Amberly, Angling, and Woodland elementary schools and fund the renovation of Moorsbridge Elementary.
The district says it plans to finalize designs for Central this coming fall and break ground in the spring of 2023 on construction, with the building being ready for students in the 2024-2025 school year.
Haverhill elementary will have it’s official groundbreaking in fall 2023 with project completion by summer 2025.
Officials expect it will take 10 to 11 years to complete construction on all five new elementary schools.
