KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A regional partnership involving the country’s longest running educational competition was announced on Wednesday, November 16.
Discover Kalamazoo, the Kalamazoo Public Schools, and the Kalamazoo Promise are now teaming up for the official 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The Kalamazoo County Regional Spelling Bee will take place at Kalamazoo Central High School on March 4, 2023, with the winner moving on for a chance to win at the national event.
“I am so excited for this partnership and the opportunity it provides the students of Kalamazoo to compete on a higher level,” said Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri, Superintendent of Kalamazoo Public Schools. “I would like to express my gratitude to the Kalamazoo Promise, Discover Kalamazoo, and other sponsors who are making this opportunity possible by providing a regional spelling bee which will give access to all our students the next level of competition that never existed in
Southwest Michigan.”
This will be the first year of the unique partnership between the three area organizations.
“Kalamazoo has a proud history of education in this community,” said Brian Persky, Director of Business Development for Discover Kalamazoo. “We see this as another opportunity to further enhance and build on this rich tradition and provide students a platform to display their talents. Hosting a regional spelling bee in Kalamazoo will allow students the chance to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and we are proud to play a part in bringing that
opportunity to kids right here in our community.”
