KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo based packaging company that has been under fire from state regulators and neighbors for water and air contamination has been fined again.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy fined Graphic Packaging an additional $10,000 Wednesday.
The latest fine is in addition to an earlier fine of just over $99,000, after several violations and a noticeable odor was being emitted from the plant in December.
A compliance plan given from the state for Graphic Packaging demands they no longer contaminate the air and provide data that measures the primary air pollutant, which is hydrogen sulfide. Neighbors have complained of a rotten egg smell in the area because of the pollutant.
In a statement Thursday, the company said, “Graphic Packaging is fully committed to complying with the Consent Order and is working with EGLE on the best way to convey monitoring data.”
Previous violations date back to February 2017.
