KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An event is planned to honor Native American Heritage this coming weekend.
The Chief Noonday Chapter is sponsoring a hike that will culminate in a visit to Chief Noonday’s gravesite. The Gravesite is located near Lockshore Road and Cressey Road.
Chief Noonday fought alongside many Tribes including members of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy of New York state, the Shawnee of Indiana and the Upper Creek of Alabama. He fought at the Battle of Thames in 1813, where Tecumseh was killed and without Tecumseh’s leadership, the confederacy of Native Nations quickly fell apart.
Back in Michigan he was involved in negotiations with the new government, with the result that in 1821 the US Government provided funding for a school and mission in present day Grand Rapids, and also that provided for reservations being established across Michigan for Native Americans.
Those who wish to participate in the hike are asked to meet at Ned’s on Gull Lake in Hickory Corners (15450 South M-43 Hwy) 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11.
