KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo is trying to go green, but sometimes there are limits on just how green you can go.
After a one year pilot project to see if the heavy equipment the city uses can burn biodiesel fuel efficiently, Director James Baker says they have now switched over to the more environmentally friendly fuel for all their big machines.
It’s a blend of regular diesel with a plant based fuel oil that will reduce emissions from their heavy equipment by about 8%, which experts say is about the equivalent of planting 680 trees.
City officials say while this development was fairly successful, going all electric with the vehicles is not an option, seeing as no one manufactures electric dump trucks, bulldozers and excavators just yet.
