KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The latest proposal to raise water rates in Kalamazoo has also raised hackles with some members of the public, but the city says it will do what it can to help poor residents avoid shutoffs.
They heard another objection last night during public comment from resident Joe Byers.
The city commission approved putting the 6% water rate hike and 12% hike in sewer rates on their next agenda for a public hearing and a vote. Utilities director Jim Baker says they are seeing the same inflationary pressures as everyone else, and in some cases like sludge hauling, chemical purchases, and new regulations, the costs are even higher.
He says residents who meet eligibility standards can qualify for assistance covering their bills if they contact the Community Action Agency or they can get on a payment plan.
If the commission approves the rate hikes in two weeks, and it appears they will, the higher rates will go into effect on January 1st. Baker says even if the higher rates are approved, local customers will still be paying less than ratepayers in most other Michigan towns.
