KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – You think you spend a lot of money this time of the year.
The Kalamazoo city commissioners not only have to do their Christmas shopping, but decide how the city will spend all its money in 2025, and do it in less than a month.
Last night, they held a work session on their $388-million budget.
Mayor Dave Anderson says budgeting is an ongoing process so almost all of the priorities and decisions have already been set.
It began early last spring when commissioners set aspirational and other financial goals for 2025. Staff has been working to put the proposed budget on paper for months.
Commissioner Qianna Decker says they approve projects, but haven’t gotten to see on a regular basis if they are working or not.
City Manager Jim Ritsema says they will take the next step in the process next week.
City commissioners are not only responsible for overseeing the city’s $85-millon dollar general fund, but the budget for the regional water and wastewater utility, which is nearly three times larger.
Commissioners asked questions to clarify spending proposals, but proposed no changes to the spending plan.
