KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – State House Speaker-elect Matt Hall of Richland says the issue of saving the lower tipped wage for restaurant servers and bartenders is the biggest one facing lawmakers right now.
Hall says with Joe Tate still in office as the Speaker of the House, Democrats are unwilling to negotiate the issue.
Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks says she is ready to reach a deal with Hall on the tipped wages.
Hall says once Republicans have the majority in the state House in January, they will take action.
Restaurant workers have been pleading with lawmakers to keep their wages where they are as the Michigan Supreme Court ruled this summer that the tipped wage would rise to being equal with minimum wage by 2030.
Hall says Republicans and Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer have heard those cries, are paying attention, and want a deal in place.
