KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – God’s Kitchen of Michigan, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger in the Kalamazoo area, is continuing to provide free meals throughout the summer.
This year, efforts are being made through a campaign called “The Big Give,” a collaboration with fellow hunger-relief organization Broncos Kitchen. The goal of the program is to provide a total of 10,000 dinners to area residents.
Officials say the project is designed to celebrate God’s Kitchen’s 10-year anniversary, while simultaneously combating hunger in the cities of Kalamazoo, Portage and Oshtemo Township.
More recently, God’s Kitchen continued those efforts by providing 250 free steak dinners in Bronson Park last week.
On Monday, Reverend William Stein of God’s Kitchen spoke with WKZO about the continued efforts to serve hungry residents.
“This week, we’re going to be serving dinners in various locations,” Stein said. “[This Tuesday, July 13] is Taco Tuesday, at Westwood Christian Reformed Church, so we invite you all to come out and participate in that free meal. On Wednesdays, we will be at our Douglass Community Association meal site and base of operations, we’re going to serve everyone a rotisserie chicken dinner. Thursday, we’re going to round out our week at Wesley Foundation, which is just west of Western Michigan University’s campus, where we’re going to serve a baked cheese-encrusted tilapia dinner.”
Stein said the meal events take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., all of which are free and open to the public.
No identification or proof of income is required to receive a meal, but they are limited to one serving per person, and each participant must be present to receive one.
“We try to limit it so that everyone who arrives at these host sites will be able to receive a meal while the food is available,” Stein said. “We thank all those in the community who have embraced, and continue to embrace, God’s Kitchen.”
