The City of Kalamazoo is preparing to close a homeless encampment on Ampersee Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
Previously, the city had announced that it would be closing the encampment on Wednesday, September 29, citing issues with escalating violence, hygiene issues and other problems.
“[There are] risks to health and safety of the residents,” Deputy City Manager Laura Lam said previously. “We’re seeing quite a bit of spikes in aggravated assaults, we’re seeing an increase in drug issues, we’re seeing tents being set on fire.”
Lam also said previously that the Gospel Mission would be opening 200 new beds next month, and several agencies including Continuum of Care are working one-on-one with residents to connect them to relevant services.
On Wednesday, WWMT announced that a protest was taking place at Riverview Drive, raising questions on where the encampment residents will go.
WWMT also noted that some residents would refuse to leave the area on Wednesday.
In addition, MLive reported that a fire broke out earlier in the day at the encampment, although it wasn’t near any tents or structures.
Reports indicate there are about 150 residents in total.
