CASSOPOLIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Cass County Sheriff’s deputies responded to two crashes within 1 1/2 hours from each other Tuesday evening, May 31.
The first one, involving a car and a motorcycle, happened around 7:17 p.m. at the intersection of Redfield Street and Gumwood Road in Milton Township.
Initial investigation showed that 36-year old Brian Sokolski of Osceola, Indiana was traveling east bound on his motorcycle on Redfield Street when he attempted to pass a vehicle turning south bound on Gumwood Road.
Sokoloski struck the vehicle, driven by 48-year-old Anthony Tokarski of Portage Indiana, who was attempting to turn west off Gumwood Road and onto Redfield Street.
Sokoloski, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to South Bend Memorial for injuries sustained during the crash which remains under investigation.
The second crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on M-62 Highway near Beeson Street in LaGrange Township.
Initial investigation showed that 40-year-old Mark Martin of Cassopolis was traveling north on M-62 when he lost control of his vehicle going around a curve.
Martin was unable to gain control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and struck a tree, causing his vehicle to overturn.
He was transported to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Although Martin was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, authorities suspect speed to be a factor in the crash.
