KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s that time again for the city of Kalamazoo. It’s time once again to flush the fire hydrants, and the city’s Public Services Department is set to begin hydrant flushing this coming weekend.
The flushing will start on Sunday, September 18, and will continue through Tuesday, September 17, with most of the action taking place at night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with some possible day flushing occurring between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. when necessary.
City officials say this is being done to remove accumulated sediments from both hydrants and mains, and will not affect the safety of the water supply. They went onto say that tap water may appear cloudy or discolored immediately after flushing and that residents should run the cold water until it becomes clear.
Besides cleaning out the system, the flushing will also allow staff to verify that all water supply systems are working correctly such as pumps, storage tanks, mains valves, and hydrants.
