CENTREVILLE, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A barn at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds was destroyed in a Saturday afternoon fire.
The Centreville Fire Department reports on its Facebook page that they were called at 4:11 p.m.. Automatic aid was provided by the Three Rivers Fire Department.
Fire was coming from the roof in the middle of barn 42 when firefighters arrived.
Due to the windy weather, the fire spread quickly and engulfed the structure.
Firefighters were unable to make an interior attack due to the fire conditions.
A ladder from the Three Rivers Fire Department was set up and an attack from above was started but the barn was declared a total loss.
Minor damage was reported to other nearby structures. Centreville fire officials credit the system they have in place for mutual aid in St. Joseph County with preventing a much more significant loss.
Besides Three Rivers, fire departments from Fabius Park, Mendon, Colon, Burr Oak and Tri Township were at the scene.
Officials with the St. Joseph County Grange Fair will be assessing surrounding barns and trees for structural integrity in the coming days. Due to the nature of the rubble, they have closed the fairgrounds temporarily until all inspections have been completed and it’s deemed safe.
