KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the man killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday had an extensive history of violent offenses.
60-year-old Timothy Kurt Holden was shot after a confrontation with officers in which he presented a firearm. Officers were initially dispatched around 10:00 a.m. to a local hospital in response to a harassment complaint. She had a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against him due to his history of violence, including a prior home invasion. Officers learned that Holden had recently cut off his court-ordered tether. Approximately two hours later, KDPS officers located Holden driving , and at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers followed the vehicle to Harkins Court. just north of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park and attempted to box in the vehicle to prevent a pursuit. As officers approached the vehicle, they say they encountered Holden armed with a handgun. During the interaction with Holden, two officers fired their weapons.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Holden was later pronounced deceased after being transported to a nearby hospital. A handgun was recovered from the scene, which Holden was legally prohibited from possessing. Additionally, a witness reported seeing Holden use methamphetamine just prior to the contact with the police.
KDPS says Holden had a lengthy and violent criminal record, including prior arrests for home invasion, assault, armed robbery, and stalking. Additionally, he was under a no-bond warrant for felony drug charges and multiple violations of his conditional bond.
